Get to Know: Calendula
What is Calendula?
Calendula flowers, or marigolds, are indigenous to Africa. They have been used for centuries to help heal wounds, cuts and rashes. Calendula flowers are well known for their abilities to soothe and repair skin. They contain vitamins and nutrients which promote good skin health. At Duke and Daisy, we use them to create Calendula infused oil. We include this oil in many of our formulations to add these benefits to the skin.
Calendula Benefits
According to some clinical studies and anecdotal evidence, applying infused calendula to the skin may have the following benefits:
- Reduce Inflammation. Calendula is rich in polyphenols which may help reduce inflammation. It also contains vitamin E, an antioxidant known for its anti-inflammatory effects.
- Minimizes Hyperpigmentation. Calendula oil is rich in vitamin A. Vitamin A is made up of several nutritional compounds, including retinoids. Retinoids are known for their ability to reduce hyperpigmentation and other visible signs of aging with regular use.
- Boosts Collagen Formation. Collagen is the building block of skin. It’s essential for skin elasticity and firmness. Your body naturally makes less collagen as you age. Calendula is rich in vitamins A and C, which are both necessary for the production of collagen.
- Prevents Signs of Aging. The antioxidant properties of infused calendula oil help in preventing premature signs of aging, as it helps protect the skin from exposure to sunlight. The vitamin E in calendula oil can help protect the collagen and elastin in the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in your face.
